The many ways you can use cannabis from head to toe

By: Amber Craig

Weed has come a long way. Since legalization in 2018, this plant has evolved, matured and graduated to being referred to as “cannabis” in society. This amazing plant is finally getting the respect it deserves!

A couple of years into the legal market in Canada, and products have really matured in a way that offers almost anyone an opportunity to try cannabis. With topicals, edibles, beverages and dialed in strains, we are just at the tip of the iceberg of innovation in this space and there are already so many ways to incorporate this plant into your daily routine.

Whatever your experience or comfort level with cannabis is, there are a variety of ways in which cannabis can be used on or in your body.

Curious? Let’s dive in!

The Brain

Our bodies have something called the endocannabinoid system, which is a natural system of neurotransmitters and cannabinoid receptors that interact with cannabinoids like THC and CBD. These receptors also exist in our brains, so simply put, cannabinoids like THC and CBD directly interact with our brains.

For example, CBD can boost signals to your brain’s serotonin receptors. Low serotonin can lead to depression, which can bring an onslaught of psychological symptoms. Because of the interaction of CBD and our brain’s receptors, cannabis can play a very holistic role in supporting mood regulation.

To give some practical examples of how cannabis can interact with your brain in a positive way, because of the anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxing properties of CBD, it’s a handy tool to have on hand when a headache hits.

Knowing the different strains is also important in curating your personal cannabis experience. Sativa is responsible for what is often referred to as a “head high” because of the effects. Sativas are a favourite among those looking to dive into creative work or just need some assistance with focusing. Alternatively, indica strains can induce sleep and are often taken in oil form before bedtime. For those who have trouble calming the mind, indicas can be your best friend.

The Body

We’ve already discussed how CBD has anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxation properties, so I’m sure you can think of a number of places on your body that could benefit from CBD. Depending on what you’re taking CBD for, you could take it internally by inhaling or ingesting it, or even go for a topical product if you have a concern that lives skin-deep.

THC works differently, but in harmony with other cannabinoids like CBD. THC is the cannabinoid that elicits psychoactive effects but is also a natural analgesic. Because of the magic of the entourage effect, the effects of dominant cannabinoids are heightened when in the presence of other cannabinoids.

Having said that, you should always seek medical advice from a doctor or someone qualified to give medical advice on specific conditions. However, understanding the properties of cannabis can help arm you with purchasing decisions.

Topicals

With topical products, cannabis is infused into formats that can be applied to the skin, hair or nails. Topicals contain carrier oils or solvents to ensure cannabinoids are absorbed directly to the area in which they are applied. With transdermal products, cannabinoids can be carried to the bloodstream, so always test things out before you commit fully (so you know the effects).

In the legal market, we’ve seen things like creams, roll-on gels, massage oils, serums and lotions with plenty of other innovations coming to market. Where ingesting cannabis can take care of how you feel from the inside out, applying a topical product to joints, skin or target areas can attract relief to a very specific area, that sounds pretty great, right?!

Depending on the person, topicals can act as a pre-workout saviour or a post-workout self-care routine.

Thanks to the rising popularity of hemp beauty products around the globe, we have only just begun to scratch the surface on cannabis innovations in the cosmetic and skincare market. For now, you can look forward to trying things like infused serums that add a plumping effect to the face.

Don’t let the price point on topical products turn you off, these things are worth every penny!

Edibles

We have always had access to quality ingestible products in the legal space, thanks to cannabis oils and capsules being introduced in the first round of legalization . But the introduction of edibles to the marketplace has given consumers a tasty break from the bland flavours of past formats. Suddenly social gatherings and holidays are so much more exciting now that you can bring cannabis chocolate or infused gummies to the party!

And if you’re tired of the labour-intensive work of making your own edibles from scratch, this should be a welcome addition to the market. Plus, with infused cooking oil available and cannabis salts and sugars making their way very soon, we can all be our own weed chef. Just ensure you warn your dinner guests before doing any experimenting at home.

Beverages

This has been one of the most anticipated and surprising success stories in the legal cannabis market so far. Besides the convenience factor that exists with beverages in terms of discreet consumption and faster onset than traditional edibles, these products are actually offering additional benefits from consumers as we’re learning.

For instance, as the popularity of non-alcoholic cocktail menus in restaurants is growing, so are social behaviours. Whether someone is in addiction recovery or choosing a more health-conscious approach, beverages offer an alternative to alcohol that has the buzz of a cocktail without the negative side effects (like a brutal hangover). Not to mention, minimal calories. We’re talking like 30 calories or less for some of the most popular cannabis drinks on the market.

And with more CBD drinks coming online, this is where the potential for fitness recovery and enhancements for mental and physical health will start to shine through.

With a little scientific knowledge and further introductions of product innovations, you can see how easy it is to incorporate cannabis into every part of your body and every part of your day. Try new things, track your success and share the knowledge!
