The Skinny On Pre-rolls: Joints, Blunts & Infused

According to industry data, the pre-roll category has grown over 50% in the last 18 months in Canada and is poised to become the number one category in the country. Whether you’re a regular pre-roll user or are new to this format, there are a lot of options within this category and we’re going to walk you through all your options in this quick guide.

JOINTS

For the consumer with convenience in mind, this one is for you! Joints are ready-to-go pre-rolls available at your local cannabis dispensary. Joints consist of cannabis product that is ground, and wrapped in rolling paper that is ready to consume as soon as it’s purchased.

The pack sizes are the biggest innovation in this category, with packs going up to 70 joints — that’s a whole ounce!

Types of joints:

CONES

Narrow at the tip, wider at the lip! Cones are best used when you want to pack a fair amount of product into your joint and are looking for a nice even burn with that fullness. The downside is that these are harder to create shape-wise at home, which is why companies choose this shape to entice customers to buy.

STRAIGHTS

Similar in style to the joints rolled by hand at home, they have recently taken our recreational smoking world by storm. Straights, or slim-style pre-rolls have become a staple for their smaller session target, and larger pack size in 10 or more. They are perfect for a single consumer at a time to enjoy by themselves, and the larger pack size is perfect for sharing!

BLUNTS

Traditionally, blunts are well-known in history as being a hollowed-out cigar, using the tobacco leaf wrap to encompass your herb. We know better than to mix our cannabis and tobacco, so in today’s legal recreational market, our Licensed Producers had to get creative. Anything labelled as a “blunt” being sold in today’s market is often wrapped with a tea leaf or a cocoa leaf. Chamomile is a popular tea leaf used in legal blunts as it provides a warm, spice flavour that complements the plant rather than take away from it.

INFUSED

Infused pre-rolls were a newer innovation introduced to the category in late 2021 and have taken the industry by storm. Milled flower is combined with either distillate, hash, shatter or other concentrates to provide a much larger percentage of THC and enhance the overall flavour of the roll. The most popular method is to use cannabis distillate that is rich in terpene flavours and use it to coat either the inside of the roll prior to adding flower, or to the outside of a completed roll. Caution: the potency on these bad boys can be as much as double the base percentage of the flower!
