Topicals
Topicals are anything that can be applied to the nails, skin or hair. Topicals provide an exciting alternative, and have a similar effect to products such as: salves, balms, lotions, serums, massage oils, lubricants, bath oils/salts and masks (just to name a few)!
All topicals will contain carriers and solvents to ensure the active ingredients are carried to the desired areas of treatment. THC and CBD alone cannot move through the epidermis, and you’ll see additives such as coconut oil and jojoba oil that will increase the effect of the active ingredients as they are readily absorbed by the body.
Topicals bypass the “first-pass” metabolism (wherein the cannabinoids are processed by the liver), and are absorbed by the skin, hair or nails to go directly to the area which they are applied.
Please note, as with all cannabis products, we cannot provide medical or cosmetic information about the use of these products, including any potential benefits of topical use. We encourage you to do some research into the benefits of topicals and their many applications.
INTOXICATION
Since the active ingredients will not enter the blood and can only act locally, they will not elicit a psychoactive effect. An exception to this would be transdermal products, in which the THC and CBD are carried to the blood.
Myth-buster
Can using topicals make you test positive for cannabinoids?
Very unlikely. You would have to apply in excess of 1000 mg to get enough THC into the blood to have an intoxicating effect.
Helpful tips
Test on a small patch of skin first, before applying fully. Some formulations may cause irritations or allergic reactions.
It’s best to apply when there is minimal perspiration, as not to dilute the product.
Consistency is key. Use the product regularly for desired effect.
Complementary terpenes
Terpenes, naturally occurring compounds within the cannabis plant, can enhance the properties of different topicals. Some of the most notable include:
Bisabolol
Camphor
Menthol
Linalool
