How to Curb the Munchies

Cannabis use has long been associated with stimulating hunger and causing “the munchies”. However, this blanket statement is not entirely accurate, but science does have an explanation for it.

Not all cannabis will stimulate hunger, the well-documented findings on this phenomena are associated specifically with THC. Research has pointed to a few reasons why THC stimulates hunger, but one reason is that it can trick your brain into thinking you are hungry, even if you are full.

While lounging around while high with a perfectly curated snack selection has its time and place, sometimes you don’t want to deal with the munchies. If that sounds like you, here are three things you can do to prevent the munchies.

  • Avoid THC: you can always start with avoiding the cannabinoid that causes hunger, which is THC. This won’t be helpful if you are still looking for the psychoactive effects, but it’s a point we have to make.

  • Look for Humulene: the terpene Humulene can be found in many cannabis strains, although isn’t considered a primary terpene in most. Humulene works as an appetite suppressant, and has a scent and taste profile with hints of hops and sage. Products with humulene as a dominant terpene include:

    • Exotic Gas by The Loud Plug: with lineage of Pink Cookies, this indica-dominant strain boasts 60% humulene.

    • The Za by Endgame: this indica-dominant strain has a 28-32% THC content and 20% humulene.

  • Try THCV: THCV stands for tetrahydrocannabivarinm, which is a cannabinoid that just made its way into the legal cannabis market. THCV reduces hunger and curbs food cravings. This cannabinoid is non-intoxicating on its own, but combined with other cannabinoids can create novel effects for consumers. Products with THCV include:

    • Spinach Feelz Blue Razz Durban Full Tilt THCV vape: this vape cartridge boasts a 7:1 ratio of THC to THCV (700mg of THC and 100mg of THCV per cartridge). This elevated experience is inspired by the Durban Poison strain with a kick of blue raspberry notes.

    • Spinach Blue Raspberry Lemonade 1:2 THC:THCV soft chews: these delicious edibles come in a pack of 5 with 10mg of THC and 20mg of THCV in the package. Each edible is 2mg of THC and 4mg of THCV.
