Terpene Tuesday: BISABOLOL

Terpenes have become a defining factor in how we select our cannabis strains. While sativa and Indica may still be the most common ways to select a strain, terpenes really help dial in a personalized experience. Canna-connoisseurs and enthusiasts know that terpenes play a major role in a strain’s taste, scent and overall cannabis experience – some consumers believe even more so than sativa or Indica classifications, and even THC percentage. If you’re looking for a truly tailored cannabis experience, terpenes are your best friend.

Nomenclature

Bisabolol is scientifically denoted as alpha-bisabolol or alternatively as levomenol, but you will likely see its shortened version or more commonplace name where terpenes are listed.

Scent and taste

This terpene is delicately sweet and floral, similar to chamomile, which is where this terpene is commonly found outside of the cannabis plant. The calming profile of the chamomile flower lends to this terpene’s effects in both consumable cannabis and topicals.

Effects and applications

Topicals

Bisabolol is commonly found in cosmetics, skincare and fragrance, which is no surprise due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive/analgesic (sensory and pain reducing), anti-microbial and anti-oxidant properties. That was a mouthful, but its known benefits gives you a great overview of this powerhouse terpene. Did we peak your attention? While we don’t see an abundance of bisabolol currently, as more topicals come online, this terpene will definitely gain more prominence.

One study actually found that bisabolol can enhance the effects of other compounds, specifically those found in tea tree oil to amplify the anti-microbial effects. Additionally, bisabolol can help skin absorb products topically, which can increase the efficacy of the active ingredients. So, while bisabolol is effective on its own, it also bolster the overall efficacy of cosmetic products and additional active ingredients.

Bisabolol is also rich in panthenol, a B-vitamin, which is an excellent humectant, which just means moisture-retaining, making it a superior ingredient for keeping the skin supple.

Consumables

In flower and consumables, bisabolol adds a calming effect to the experience and can aid anxiety and racing thoughts. Plain and simple, just like your nightcap chamomile tea.

So, in the long and short of it, bisabolol supports youthful, supple skin and a calm mind. It might just be just the kind of self-care you need.
